Tragedy struck early Monday off the coast of Sicily as a violent storm sank the luxury yacht 'Bayesian,' killing one and leaving six people missing, including British tech mogul Mike Lynch. The British-flagged sailboat, measuring 56 meters in length, was anchored near Porticello with 22 people on board when the storm hit, according to Italian coast guard reports.

Eyewitnesses noted that the yacht disappeared rapidly beneath the waves just before dawn, though 15 people, including a one-year-old child, managed to escape. The names of the dead and missing have not been publicly disclosed, but sources confirmed Lynch's apparent absence.

The Italian coast guard highlighted that those missing hold British, American, and Canadian nationalities. "The magnitude of the storm was unexpected," said a coast guard official in Palermo.

Italy has recently been subjected to extreme weather conditions, with floods and landslides causing significant damage in the north. A nearby boat managed to maintain its position amid the storm, avoiding a collision with Bayesian, thanks to prompt actions by its captain, Karsten Borner. Survivors were found on a life raft and transferred to safety before being picked up by the coast guard.

Mike Lynch, celebrated in the tech world for building Autonomy, has been embroiled in legal troubles in recent years. Despite a San Francisco jury acquitting him recently, the storm adds to his tumultuous history.

Prosecutors in Termini Imerese have initiated an investigation into the sinking. The yacht, crafted by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008, had a notable 75-meter mast. Owned by Revtom Limited, the vessel was last tracked east of Palermo with 'at anchor' status.

The U.K. foreign ministry is in touch with local authorities and ready to offer consular support to affected Britons.
