Greece Promises Millions in Emergency Compensation After Athens Blaze

Greece has announced emergency compensation of millions of euros for households and businesses impacted by a devastating fire near Athens. The blaze, which began on August 11, destroyed 10,000 hectares, killed one woman, and severely damaged 146 houses and 31 businesses.

Greece announced on Tuesday that it would provide millions of euros in emergency compensation to hundreds of affected households and businesses following a massive blaze near Athens, which resulted in the death of one woman and the destruction of 10,000 hectares.

The fire, which started on August 11 near the town of Varnavas, moved rapidly, reaching the northern suburbs of the city on the slopes of Mount Penteli. Preliminary inspections have revealed extensive damage, with 146 houses severely affected and 31 businesses impacted.

The Finance Ministry stated that up to 150,000 euros would be allotted to households, combining government aid and interest-free loans, and up to 500,000 euros for destroyed businesses. Total compensation is expected to exceed 30 million euros. The Prime Minister's office plans to announce a comprehensive fire protection and reforestation strategy for the Attica region by the end of September.
