Scorching Summer: 2024 Poised to Shatter Heat Records Amid Climate Crisis

The summer of 2024 has become the hottest on record, with temperatures likely making it the warmest year in history, according to the European climate service Copernicus. Scientists attribute the rising temperatures to human-caused climate change, exacerbated by an El Nino event, leading to more extreme weather conditions globally.

Summer 2024 has already marked itself as the hottest on record, bringing unprecedented heatwaves and extreme weather conditions, as reported by the European climate service Copernicus on Friday.

This alarming trend, reminiscent of last year's record-breaking temperatures, underscores the accelerating impact of human-caused climate change, intensified by a recent El Nino event. Copernicus data reveal that the northern meteorological summer averaged a searing 16.8 degrees Celsius (62.24 degrees Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous record set in 2023 by 0.03 degrees Celsius (0.05 degrees Fahrenheit).

Experts, including Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo and climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf, emphasize that these rising temperatures highlight the worsening climate crisis gripping the globe. The implications are severe, with more intense and frequent heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires becoming the new normal.
