Union Minister Launches Ambitious 'Cruise Bharat Mission'

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the 'Cruise Bharat Mission' from Mumbai to boost cruise tourism and double passenger traffic by 2029. The mission will be implemented in three phases focusing on infrastructure, cruise experience, and sustainability. It aims to transform India's maritime landscape and create 400,000 jobs.

In a significant move aimed at revitalizing India's cruise tourism, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the 'Cruise Bharat Mission' from Mumbai port on Monday. The initiative seeks to double cruise passenger traffic by 2029.

The mission, divided into three key segments—ocean and harbour, river, and inland—is set to run from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2029. Sonowal, the Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, emphasized that the mission aims to harness the potential of India's vast coastline through world-class infrastructure, enhanced tourist experiences, and sustainability.

Phase 1 will include studies and alliances with neighboring countries, modernizing cruise terminals and creating new destinations. Phase 2 will develop high-potential cruise locations, and Phase 3 will integrate cruise circuits across the Indian Subcontinent. The government aims to increase sea cruise passengers to one million and river cruise passengers to 1.5 million by 2029, creating 400,000 jobs in the sector.
