Taiwan Braces for Largest Typhoon in 30 Years
Taiwan braced for Typhoon Kong-rey, shutting down cities, closing financial markets, and cancelling flights. The storm, set to be the largest in 30 years, led to evacuations and military preparations. Kong-rey weakened slightly overnight but remained powerful, with severe winds and rain impacting the island.
Taiwan has taken extensive precautions as Typhoon Kong-rey approaches, closing cities and suspending domestic flights. The storm, the largest by size since 1996, is expected to make landfall with powerful winds and heavy rain.
Authorities have issued high wind warnings and evacuated 1,300 people from high-risk areas. Taiwan's defense ministry has also mobilized 36,000 troops for potential rescue operations.
While businesses like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co have activated typhoon protocols, the storm is expected to affect Taiwan's east coast before moving toward the Taiwan Strait, and experts urge residents to remain indoors.
