Bhutan's Ambitious Journey to Build a Mindfulness City
Bhutan plans to build 'Gelephu Mindfulness City' as a link between South Asia and Southeast Asia. The city aims to boost the economy with sustainable practices, meditation spaces, and eco-tourism. This initiative hopes to surpass GDP-focused measures, addressing Bhutan's economic dependency and high youth unemployment.
Bhutan, famed for its Gross National Happiness metric, is venturing into a groundbreaking project with the launch of 'Gelephu Mindfulness City.' This visionary city aims to seamlessly connect South Asia and Southeast Asia through a specially governed hub.
The city, sprawling over 2,500 square kilometers at the Indian border, will emphasize sustainable living by promoting walking, cycling, and green spaces for wellness and meditation. It will also house sectors like finance, green energy, technology, healthcare, and tourism, aiming to reshape Bhutan's economic landscape.
The brainchild of King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, this 21-year phased project seeks to attract international investment, develop skills, and create job opportunities. By aligning with Bhutan’s Buddhist heritage, it focuses on mindfulness and well-being, hoping to serve as a beacon for innovative urban planning.
