In a significant blow to environmental efforts, $70 million in USAID funding for conservation projects in Colombia has been put on hold. This decision follows harsh criticism from President Donald Trump, who labeled the U.S. Agency for International Development as 'incompetent and corrupt.'

Colombia's Environment Minister, Susana Muhamad, highlighted the heavy toll this will take on the Amazon, a region already suffering heavily due to deforestation. Efforts to preserve hundreds of square kilometers of forest area annually are now in jeopardy.

A noteworthy portion of the frozen funds was earmarked for the USAID's Amazonia Mia program. President Trump's directive also includes downsizing the agency's workforce, which had more than 10,000 employees before this drastic reduction.
