A deadly assault by the armed group CODECO resulted in the deaths of more than 80 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this week, as confirmed by UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO.

Initially reported by local authorities, the death toll has risen significantly from 51 as peacekeepers reached the scene. The group's strategic use of bladed weapons delayed MONUSCO's timely response, allowing CODECO to wreak havoc by killing civilians, setting homes ablaze, and spreading terror.

This attack highlights the ongoing turmoil orchestrated by various militias, including CODECO, in the resource-rich region of eastern Congo. The instability is further compounded by the continuous southward movement of M23 rebels, which has heightened the humanitarian crisis in the area.
