Cyclone Zelia's Aftermath: Western Australia's Ports Reopen Amidst Storm Impact
Western Australia's ports of Dampier and Varanus Island have reopened following the impact of Tropical Cyclone Zelia, which brought severe weather to the state's Pilbara region. After inspections by Pilbara Ports confirmed safe operations, activities resumed. The cyclone had caused port closures, including Port Hedland, affecting major mining operations.
Western Australia's vital ports of Dampier and Varanus Island have resumed operations after being hit by Tropical Cyclone Zelia, the most intense storm to strike the Pilbara coast since April 2023's Cyclone Ilsa. The storm brought heavy rains and winds up to 290 kph before making landfall.
According to Pilbara Ports, the facilities, which serve as key hubs for oil and gas processing, were secured for safe reopening after thorough inspections of navigation aids, channels, and berths. The region, including the world's largest iron ore hub, Port Hedland, had shut down operations as Zelia approached.
Now downgraded to a tropical low, the former cyclone continues to weaken over the inland Pilbara. Emergency warnings remain in effect, with the risk of rising water levels in affected towns. Despite the challenges, companies like Fortescue and Rio Tinto are working diligently to reassess and resume operations.
