AI and Solar Tech: Protecting Communities from Leopard Attacks in Pune

Pune's Junnar area combats frequent leopard attacks with AI cameras, solar fences, and protective gear. With rising human-leopard conflicts due to ideal cultivation conditions and increased prey, authorities introduced cutting-edge measures. Initiatives include electric fencing, AI-equipped cameras, and neck protection for locals, all aimed at reducing fatalities.

In a bid to mitigate leopard attacks, authorities in Pune's Junnar region have deployed advanced technologies such as AI-enabled cameras and solar-powered electric fencing. Over the past year, nine people lost their lives in leopard encounters, prompting forest officials to ramp up preventative measures in the area.

Situated at the junction of horticultural growth and wildlife habitats, Junnar has seen a surge in human-wildlife conflict, exacerbated by the dense plantations ideal for leopards. With a reported 41 injuries in five years, officials declared 233 villages as potential leopard disaster zones, implementing new strategies to curb the threat.

Among the steps taken are the distribution of specially designed neck belts to protect farm laborers from attacks. Local residents have responded positively to the measures, while the expansion of facilities like the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre remains crucial for future wildlife management.
