Bangalore Explores Zero Bacteria Tech for Wastewater Revolution

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is considering implementing IISc's Zero Bacteria technology to improve the quality of treated wastewater in apartment complexes. This initiative is part of efforts to enhance sustainable groundwater management and address Bengaluru's water challenges amid growing concerns over water security and reuse.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is evaluating the deployment of Zero Bacteria technology, devised by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) scientists, to boost the water quality from sewage treatment plants in apartments, according to BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar.

Speaking at the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre Bilateral Workshop at IISc, Manohar discussed ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable groundwater management in Bengaluru. An expert task force from IISc, the Central Groundwater Authority, and BWSSB has been formed to oversee borewell activities.

To curb groundwater misuse, advanced artificial intelligence is being used to monitor water levels and formulate efficient usage strategies, particularly during dry seasons. Manohar highlighted the critical importance of water security and the need for innovative solutions to meet future challenges, calling on the scientific community to aid in both drinking water supply and wastewater treatment advancements.
