Nigeria Braces for Peak Season Flood Threats
Nigeria's environment ministry has issued a flood alert across 19 states due to anticipated heavy rainfall from August 5-9. The alert highlights regions in the northwest, south, and central areas at risk. Previous severe flooding in May and 2022 resulted in significant casualties and damages.
Nigeria's environment ministry issued a critical flood alert on Wednesday, urging 19 states to brace for heavy rains forecasted from August 5-9 that may trigger flooding.
The alert comes from the National Flood Early Warning Center, which pinpointed areas at high risk, including key states in the northwest, south, and central regions, like Niger State. In May, this region endured devastating floods that claimed 117 lives, left many missing, and destroyed countless homes.
With Nigeria in its peak rainy season—often synonymous with severe floods—authorities are reminding locals and governments to act proactively. Last year's floods were catastrophic, with over 600 deaths, 1.4 million displaced, and vast tracts of farmland affected.
