Incessant rains in Uttarkashi since Monday morning hampered rescue operations in disaster-hit Dharali and Harsil, even as one more body was recovered and 42 people remain missing following flash floods in the area a week ago, officials said.
It has been almost a week since raging waters and mudslides buried half of Dharali village. The inclement weather forced rescuers to temporarily halt their search for the missing in the debris. Hopes of finding survivors diminish as efforts are suspended due to intense rain.
Vinay Shankar, Garhwal commissioner, stated that 43 people were initially reported missing, with only one body recovered. Authorities distribute financial assistance and plan a larger relief package as evacuations continue. A new Bailey bridge near Gangnani has been operationalized, promising improved connectivity for relief efforts.
