Delhi’s Cloud Seeding Ambitions Await Green Light

The Delhi government's artificial rain trials face delays due to pending approval from the India Meteorological Department. Intended to tackle pollution through cloud seeding, the trials will occur under clear weather conditions as funds have been allocated. The project's window extends through November, pending IMD's clearance.

The Delhi government’s ambitious plan to experiment with artificial rain through cloud seeding may face further delays. As per officials, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet issued a clear go-ahead, which is crucial for the trials to commence.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized the necessity of dry weather for meaningful results. The trials await IMD's confirmation that no natural rain is likely in the forecast. Previously scheduled multiple times, the trials have repeatedly seen postponements due to incoming monsoon conditions.

The initiative, in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, is aimed at pollution reduction during winter months. The trials' success depends on favorable weather conditions, and they are set to occur only after rigorous scrutiny by multiple state and local authorities.
