Cyclone Chaos: Everest Tourism Halted Amid Snowstorms

Severe snowstorms from a cyclone have shut down tourism in the Everest region, stranding hikers and causing a helicopter crash during rescue attempts. Authorities have abruptly closed the Everest region to tourists due to treacherous conditions caused by a cyclone-induced snowstorm. The severe weather has left trekkers stranded and even caused a helicopter crash during a rescue mission, though the pilot survived, officials said Wednesday.

Rescue operations have been urgent, as trekking routes are blanketed in deep snow. Around 1,500 hikers, including foreign tourists, became disoriented. In Manang district, hundreds have been guided to safety by Nepalese military rescuers. Authorities have advised extreme caution with more inclement weather expected.

Tibetan officials have similarly suspended tourist activities as icy roads and poor visibility have created unsafe conditions. Forecasts indicate continued freezing temperatures and snowfall, sparking concerns of further disruptions and potential emergencies in the region.
