Early Monday morning, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-e Sharif, claiming the lives of at least 20 individuals and injuring hundreds more. Local authorities have expressed concerns that the death toll might increase as rescue efforts continue.

The earthquake caused significant damage to Mazar-e Sharif's historic Blue Mosque, one of Afghanistan's most sacred sites. Videos shared online showed scattered debris, although the main structure fortunately remains intact. The tremor also disrupted power across the nation, including in Kabul.

This disaster adds to the challenges Afghanistan's Taliban administration faces, including reduced foreign aid and recent refugee deportations. Situated on two active faults, Afghanistan is prone to such seismic events, having suffered a deadly quake as recently as August.
