Cyclone Ditwah has caused devastating landslides and flooding in Sri Lanka, resulting in at least 153 deaths and 191 missing persons. Over 500,000 people have been affected, with many seeking refuge in relief centers. Rescue operations are underway, but continued rains exacerbate the situation.
Sri Lanka is grappling with a catastrophic natural disaster as Cyclone Ditwah has claimed at least 153 lives, leaving 191 individuals missing. Officials announced on Saturday that over half a million people are affected nationwide amid widespread landslides and flooding.
The Disaster Management Centre reported that more than 78,000 residents have taken shelter in nearly 800 relief centers, primarily established in schools. An extensive rescue operation involving police, navy, and army units is delivering aid, clearing roads, and conveying stranded families to safety.
The tragedy has displaced thousands, including Mallika Kumari, whose family fled their submerged home near the Kelani River. With homes underwater and power outages rampant, communities face continued rainfall threats, exacerbating financial and safety concerns as relief efforts intensify.
