At least 19 people were confirmed dead after a boat capsized on Lake Mai-Ndombe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, provincial authorities reported.

The tragedy occurred when heavy winds disabled one of the boat's engines, leading to the accident. Provincial governor Nkoso Kevani Lebon stated, 'We've identified 19 bodies and 82 survivors, although the search continues.'

Local officials underscore that despite previous proposals to ban makeshift wooden boats, such regulations have yet to be enacted, leaving residents vulnerable in a region with a troubling history of water transport accidents.
