ODISHA, INDIA—The blackbuck population in Odisha's Ganjam district has risen by 498 over the past year, reaching a total of 9,287, according to recent census data released on Wednesday. The survey, conducted by the Forest Department, involved around 500 participants including wildlife experts and activists.

The increase in blackbuck numbers reflects improved habitat conditions and ongoing protection efforts by local communities and forest staff, experts say. Notably, experimental drone-based aerial and AI-assisted monitoring was employed for the first time in certain areas to bolster the accuracy of the count.

The highly protected species, known locally as 'Krushnasar Murga,' receives significant cultural respect. Locals believe that sightings in paddy fields are auspicious, which deters harm despite the animals sometimes grazing on crops. Plans are underway to restore their habitat in the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary.
