Revolutionizing Weather Forecasting: A Hyper-Local Approach in Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir government plans to implement a hyper-local weather forecasting system to enhance early warnings. This includes installing new radars and weather stations, focusing on high-risk districts. The initiative aims to bolster disaster preparedness against hydro-meteorological events, with efforts also directed towards infrastructure resilience.

The Jammu and Kashmir government announced plans to enhance weather forecasting systems, with a special emphasis on early warnings for cloudburst-related rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will introduce a hyper-local forecasting system, targeting seven critical districts in the Himalayan states.

Significant infrastructure upgrades are planned, including the installation of four additional doppler weather radars and 34 automatic weather stations and snow gauges across Jammu and Kashmir. Key high-risk districts such as Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban are under special scrutiny, given their vulnerability to hydro-meteorological events.

Efforts are also underway to improve road and bridge resilience against natural disasters like flash floods and cloudbursts. The Ministry of Home Affairs has assessed flood damages, aligning disaster readiness strategies with technologic interventions for better risk management and infrastructure resilience.
