In a shocking revelation, around 1,000 Khair trees have reportedly been felled in the forest within Jhamber Panchayat of Una district. Villagers stumbled upon the illegal deforestation on Wednesday, raising concerns about the forest department's oversight.
The Khair tree, scientifically known as Senegalia catechu, is treasured for its heartwood, producing 'kattha' for paan, and holds importance in traditional medicine, livestock fodder, and timber production. Locals have expressed anger, suspecting collusion between some government officials and the mafia responsible for this ecological damage.
Villagers demand a rigorous investigation. In response, a joint team of forest officials and police has been dispatched to assess the situation, with Divisional Forest Officer Sushil Rana vowing action against those behind this environmental crime.
