The Sach Pass, a crucial 14,500-foot link between Chamba and Pangi Valley in Himachal Pradesh, is expected to reopen by May 20. Snow clearance is underway, with the Public Works Department working intensely to clear a 7 km stretch. This reopening will dramatically shorten the journey from Pangi to Chamba.

The long-anticipated reopening of the Sach Pass, standing at 14,500 feet and bridging Chamba with Himachal Pradesh's remote Pangi Valley, could occur by May 20, provided clear weather persists, officials revealed on Thursday. Currently, a crucial 7 km stretch on the Chamba-Killar route remains under snow, necessitating extensive clearance efforts led by the Public Works Department (PWD).

According to Ravi Sharma, PWD's executive engineer, "The work is progressing on a war footing," as teams advance simultaneously from the Pangi and Chamba sides. During the harsh winter months, when heavy snowfall prevails, the Sach Pass shuts, severing the Pangi Valley from Chamba. Residents are forced into a daunting 750 km detour via Jammu and Kullu to access district headquarters.

When accessible, the Sach Pass reduces the Pangi-Chamba journey to 172 km, playing a vital role in easing travel. Typically, this passage remains open from June to October, highlighting its significance in maintaining connectivity within the region.
