Environmental groups have voiced their disapproval after a district wetland committee report concluded that eight water bodies in Thane and Navi Mumbai do not qualify for protection under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017.
The report, which examined water bodies including the NRI and T S Chanakya sites, has been dismissed as 'erroneous' by environmentalists who accuse the panel of neglecting state forest reports and Bombay High Court observations acknowledging their ecological significance.
Activists assert that the committee's reliance on reports from the City and Industrial Development Corporation, coupled with its dismissal of broader wetland definitions, threatens the ecological integrity of the region.
