In a landmark move toward sustainable development, Ladakh has signed a memorandum of understanding with the School of Planning and Architecture to draft its inaugural comprehensive master plan. The initiative aims to address the absence of formal construction guidelines, which has led to unregulated growth adversely impacting Ladakh's fragile ecology and civic infrastructure.
The master plan will encompass all districts of Ladakh, offering a framework for future growth. It will assess demographic trends, economic activities, environmental conditions, and transportation networks. Detailed provisions will include signage systems, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and preservation of Ladakh's unique heritage and architecture.
This marks the first structured planning framework for Ladakh since gaining Union territory status in 2019. Officials are integrating modern technologies like AI and GIS to monitor climate change impacts. The plan aims to align economic growth with ecological preservation, setting Ladakh as a model for sustainable development in high-altitude regions.
