A magnitude 6 earthquake shook Samar island in the Philippines with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Located near San Julian in Eastern Samar province, officials anticipate potential aftershocks. Minor cracks appeared in some buildings, but no severe damage or injuries were reported.
A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Samar island in the central Philippines on Monday, with authorities warning of aftershocks although there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The Philippine seismology agency, PHIVOLCS, reported the tremor near San Julian in Eastern Samar at a depth of 56 km (35 miles). They cautioned about possible aftershocks. Disaster officer Thomas Campomanes mentioned initial reports of minor cracks in buildings but confirmed no severe damage. There were also no initial injuries or fatalities reported by local disaster officials.
According to Campomanes, the earthquake lasted approximately 30 seconds. "It felt like being dribbled up and down," he said. Consequently, employees have evacuated a local government building, pending structural safety assessments. The Philippines, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," experiences frequent seismic activity, with over 800 earthquakes annually. In October, two major offshore earthquakes resulted in seven fatalities in the southern Philippines.
