Reviving Bhairon Marg: Underpass Nears Completion After Years of Delay

The long-delayed Bhairon Marg underpass project in Delhi is back on track and expected to be completed by February next year. Initially stalled due to flooding issues, the project is crucial for alleviating traffic congestion on the Ring Road, with the first phase already operational for light vehicles.

The Bhairon Marg underpass construction, halted for almost three years, is finally progressing and expected to be completed by February next year, announced Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Singh Verma. Known as Underpass Number 5, the project was delayed when a precast concrete box sank due to flooding from the Yamuna River in 2023.

Traffic management challenges have been prominent as only half of the underpass is currently open. Temporary diversions and barricades are leading to congestion around the Ring Road, Bhairon Marg, and Sarai Kale Khan areas. The project is part of the Pragati Maidan underground transit corridor aiming to ease commutes once fully operational.

After obtaining necessary approvals, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs sanctioned revised designs, adapting the underpass for light vehicles by reducing its height and capacity. With diligent efforts, the Public Works Department aims to finish key construction elements before the upcoming monsoon season.
