Delhi's Building Height Norms: A Safety Overhaul in the Making

The Delhi government is reviewing building height regulations to enforce stricter fire safety measures following fatal accidents. Current guidelines allow many residential buildings to bypass fire safety norms. Officials aim to include buildings under 17 meters in mandatory fire safety compliance to prevent future incidents.

In response to recent fire tragedies in Delhi, the city government is evaluating changes to the building height regulations. The objective is to strengthen fire safety standards for residential buildings.

Presently, most residential structures in Delhi can avoid acquiring fire safety no objection certificates (NOCs) due to existing guidelines allowing electricity connections without them. Power Minister Ashish Sood highlighted the importance of revising these rules to ensure tighter safety precautions.

Buildings taller than 17.5 meters must adhere to these safety norms, but the government aims to extend these measures to those under 17 meters as well. This development follows recent accidents in areas like Palam and Vivek Vihar, which resulted in significant loss of life.
