Delhi Zoo Implements Cooling Measures to Safeguard Wildlife From Extreme Heat

Delhi's National Zoological Park adopts a comprehensive plan to protect animals from the severe summer heat, featuring a rotation system, expanded cooling facilities, and innovative shade solutions.

The National Zoological Park in Delhi has launched an extensive plan to shield its animals from the scorching summer temperatures. The zoo has implemented a two-shift rotation system and bolstered its cooling facilities, including the addition of pools, sprinklers, and shaded shelters.

Zoological Director Sanjeet Kumar explained that large mammals such as tigers, lions, and bears now share enclosures in two shifts, ensuring each group benefits from cooling measures and shade. The zoo also cleans, disinfects, and refills moats regularly to maintain hygiene. Various cooling devices, such as sprinklers and water coolers, have been set up in enclosures, including those for tigers, lions, and leopards.

Additional measures include installing green mats to cut down on direct sunlight, creating sheltered resting areas with bamboo and straw for animal comfort, and using sprinklers across herbivore enclosures. Staff provide elephants and rhinos with frequent water showers, and side-wall curtains are used for bird enclosures. Primates enjoy refreshing daily fruit ice balls as part of the cooling strategy.

By taking these steps, Delhi Zoo aims to ensure the wellbeing of its inhabitants, adjusting procedures to accommodate the rising heat and remaining vigilant of any unusual animal behavior.
