The Middle East conflict is increasingly pushing millions of people to the brink of hunger due to escalating fuel and transport costs, dramatically driving up food prices. The U.N. World Food Programme issued this stark warning, noting that funding shortfalls are forcing aid agencies to reduce their assistance.

Joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year have ignited a regional conflict, stretching from the Gulf into Lebanon and disrupting crucial shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. This has forced vessels to reroute and severely constrained global energy flows and supply chains.

The WFP forecasts as many as 45 million people could face acute food insecurity if oil prices remain elevated. Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka are among the worst hit, with energy and food imports facing significant disruptions. Vulnerable children in Somalia might face the brunt of food shortages, highlighting the urgent need for increased funding and resolution to the ongoing supply chain issues.
