Brunei: A Strategic Cabinet Reshuffle Points to Succession Planning
Brunei's ruler has announced a cabinet reshuffle, appointing younger sons as ministers and creating new portfolios. This move hints at succession planning amid a global energy crisis. The reshuffle strengthens policy coordination, focuses on economic diversification, and sets the stage for sustainable growth and job creation.
In a significant political move, Brunei's ruler announced a major cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, implementing new key portfolios and appointing younger members, signaling potential succession strategies in the oil-rich nation. This change marks the first since 2022 as Brunei navigates challenges from a global energy crisis fueled by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The shuffling was revealed just as Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, holding roles as prime minister, defense and finance minister, recuperates post knee surgery. The Sultan maintained his main positions but appointed his second eldest son, Prince Abdul Malik, to the Prime Minister's Office, while Prince Abdul Mateen, a noted polo enthusiast, took over the foreign ministry.
Notably, Brunei reshaped its cabinet with several new ministerial roles, particularly transforming the Primary Resources and Tourism Ministry into the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. Emphasizing economic diversification, this reshuffle not only aims at robust growth and job creation but also includes the highest female appointments to date, illustrating a shift towards inclusive governance.
