Divers conducting underwater cleanup operations in the central Mediterranean have made a groundbreaking discovery: the first-ever footage of an adult great white shark in this region.

The footage, released on Monday, captures the shark accompanied by a group of striped pilot fish, filmed by volunteer diver Derk Remmers of Ghost Diving.

The rare sight, sparked by deceased marine life in ghost nets, underscores the importance of protecting the Mediterranean's marine ecosystem from threats like abandoned fishing gear, experts say.
