BP Restructures Leadership for Upstream and Downstream Units
BP appointed Gordon Birrell to lead its upstream unit, while Richard Harding will temporarily head the downstream unit. This is part of BP's strategy to reorganize into two main business segments: upstream, which includes oil and gas operations along with renewables, and downstream focusing on refining and mobility.
BP announced on Tuesday the appointment of longtime company veteran Gordon Birrell to lead its upstream unit, while Richard Harding has been named interim head of the downstream unit. This reshuffling is part of BP's planned organizational transformation into two primary business segments.
The upstream division will encompass BP's oil and gas operations including exploration, development, and production. It will also oversee joint ventures, renewable natural gas, and carbon capture initiatives.
Meanwhile, the downstream unit will incorporate refining, terminals, pipelines, and services related to mobility and convenience. The unit will handle biofuels, aviation fuels, hydrogen, and the company's Castrol lubricants brand.
