NASA has unveiled the crew for its upcoming Artemis III mission, slated to launch in 2027. This pivotal mission will involve a docking demonstration between three spacecraft in Earth's orbit. The team includes three U.S. astronauts: Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, and Randy Bresnik, alongside Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency.
Artemis III aims to test moon landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin, marking their first trial in space. This mission underscores an international collaborative effort, with Parmitano being the first European Space Agency astronaut participating in an Artemis venture, highlighting Italy's ongoing collaboration in NASA's Artemis program.
Randy Bresnik will lead the expedition as mission commander, bringing over 7,000 flight hours in 95 different aircraft to the table. Pilot Luca Parmitano, a veteran of two spaceflights, represents a significant European presence. Mission specialist Frank Rubio holds the record for the longest continuous spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut, while Andre Douglas, a novice in space travel, brings extensive engineering expertise to the team.
