Sri Lankan Navy has passion for Turtle Conservation

Turtles, once found in abundance around the world, are now classified as endangered. These sea animals are very much vulnerable to pollution and changing sea environment. As such, the Sri Lankan Navy is also engaged in turtle conservation. The Navy under the guidance of Commander of the Navy and Steering Committee Head of Marine and Eco-Friendly Projects, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva has been involved in turtle conservation projects to release the endangered species back to the ocean after they hatch.

Over the last two years, the Navy, with support from a dedicated team of trained personnel, has successfully released 5,700 baby turtles into the ocean. On 9^th and 10^th of this month, the turtle conservation project, which was conducted in the Southeastern Naval Command successfully released 250 hatchlings.

The Navy, realizing the importance of the conservation of the aquatic ecosystems and its resources, has been playing a pivotal role.
