Giants RB Barkley misses practice

New York Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley sat out Tuesday's practice after participating in position drills.
Barkley left practice Monday with a strained hamstring. He appeared to be hurt on a reception down the sideline, outrunning linebacker Alec Ogletree and cornerback Janoris Jenkins to catch a ball on a wheel route and did not return to the field.
Barkley was walking gingerly and had ice and a wrap on his left leg, but head coach Pat Shurmur said later in the day the injury was minor.
"He just tweaked his hamstring," Shurmur said. "(It's) day today, we'll just see where he's at, but really nothing to add from yesterday. Nothing serious, I think. Just day to day."
The Giants vowed to be careful with Barkley, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft. He took his first carry 39 yards in the preseason opener.
Jonathan Stewart, formerly of the Carolina Panthers, is likely to line up with the first-team offense should Barkley remain on the sideline this week, with Wayne Gallman also in line for increased work.
"Certainly, player safety is right on the front burner for all of us all the time," Shurmur said of Barkley's availability for Friday's second preseason game. "So if he's able to go, he'll play; if he's not, then he won't be out there.
