Struggling Brazilian club Cruzeiro have hired former Brazil and Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari in an attempt to avoid a second successive relegation. The Belo Horizonte side were relegated from the top flight Serie A last season for the first time and are currently in the second division relegation zone with just five wins in their first 15 games.

"Aware of the need for an immediate recovery in the Serie B, the directors of Cruzeiro agreed to hire coach Luiz Felipe Scolari on Wednesday night," the club said. Scolari had been without a club since leaving Palmeiras for the third time last year and has signed a contract until the end of 2022.

It is his second spell at a club that faces severe financial troubles. Fans invaded the club's training centre earlier this month, angry at the poor run of results. The much travelled coach is best known in Brazil for leading the South American nation to their fifth World Cup title in 2002.

He was also coach when they were beaten 7-1 at home by Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.
