Bears OLB Floyd (hand) has surgery, could play Week 1

Chicago Bears outside linebacker Leonard Floyd had surgery Sunday after suffering a fractured right hand in Saturday's preseason game against Denver, the team announced Monday.

Head coach Matt Nagy said the team is "staying optimistic" about Floyd's availability for the Sept. 9 season opener at the Green Bay Packers, but added that Floyd will likely be limited by a protective cast or padding when he gets back on the field.

"I don't think it's going to be healed (by Week 1)," Nagy told reporters. "I think he's going to have to end up playing through it. It might require something in regards to having a cast or a club-type deal. There's been evidence of guys that have had that and been productive, and that's what we're hoping right now."

Floyd hurt the hand on a play Nagy described as "unlucky" during the first quarter against the Broncos. He was cut-blocked and braced himself with his hands on the ground as he fell forward.

Nagy called the diagnosis more of "a relief" because he was concerned about a possible season-ending issue. He added that Floyd's surgery went "as good as it could go."

Floyd, who turns 26 on Sept. 8, missed the final six games of the 2017 season with a knee injury, and he missed four games during his rookie campaign in 2016, as well. He has 11.5 sacks (7.0 as a rookie) in 22 games (all starts) since the Bears took him ninth overall in the 2016 draft.

Meanwhile, Nagy said the team is still evaluating the status of tight end Adam Shaheen, but NFL Network reported Shaheen could be ready for Week 1 after his injury turned out be not as bad as it appeared.

Shaheen was also hurt in the first quarter on Saturday, going down awkwardly while being tackled and limping off.

Per NFL Network, he suffered a low-ankle sprain and will have more tests, but a more serious injury like a high-ankle sprain, fracture or torn ligament has been ruled out.

A second-round pick in 2017 out of Division II Ashland, Shaheen caught 12 passes for 127 yards and three scores as a rookie. The 23-year-old recently stepped into the Bears' inline tight end role after veteran Dion Sims was injured. Free agent signee Trey Burton is the top option as the Bears' flex tight end.
