White Sox deal LHP Avilan to Phillies, place 1B Abreu on DL
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-handed reliever Luis Avilan from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor league right-hander Felix Paulino.
The White Sox also announced that first baseman Jose Abreu has been placed on the 10-day disabled list following surgery on his lower abdominal/groin area Tuesday. He is expected to resume baseball activities in about two weeks.
The White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr from Triple-A Charlotte, and infielder Jose Rondon was recalled from Charlotte. Paulino will be assigned to Double-A Birmingham.
To make room for Avilan on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-hander Jose Taveras for assignment.
Avilan, 29, has a 3.86 ERA with 46 strikeouts, 14 walks and two home runs allowed in 39 2/3 innings pitched this season. The Caracas, Venezuela native is seventh in the American League with 58 appearances and has held left-handed hitters to a .136 average with no extra-base hits since May 21.
In his seventh major league season, Avilan has a 3.09 ERA in 287 career games, all in relief. He has made at least 60 appearances in four of the past five seasons. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as an amateur free agent in 2005.
Paulino, 23, was 4-4 with a 3.91 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 34 walks in 92 innings over 31 games, including nine starts, combined between Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading this season. The Dominican Republic native was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 2014.
Burr, 24, is 4-3 with a 2.45 ERA, two saves, 51 strikeouts and a .190 opponents average over 37 combined appearances this season between Birmingham and Charlotte.
Rondon, 24, is batting .250 with 15 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs and 38 RBIs in 80 games for Charlotte. He also hit .245 with three doubles, three homers and six RBIs in 22 games over two stints with the White Sox earlier this season.
