Serena ready to take New York spotlight at U.S. Open
Sloane Stephens will be defending her title at the U.S. Open but all eyes will be on Serena Williams over the coming two weeks as the six-times champion attempts to win her first Grand Slam title since becoming a mother. The tournament will be the third Grand Slam since Williams returned to competition after giving birth last September, and while she has yet to lift a title in 2018 the former world number one has such a formidable record at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center that she can never be counted out.

NFL notebook: Browns activate WR Gordon
Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was activated from the non-football injury list and participated in Cleveland's walkthrough practice Saturday. Gordon missed training camp while away from the team addressing his health at a University of Florida treatment facility.
DeChambeau delighted after charging to a four-stroke lead
Bryson DeChambeau birdied half the holes he played in the third round to seize a four-stroke lead as he and compatriot Keegan Bradley shook up the Northern Trust leaderboard on Saturday. DeChambeau, looking to top the FedEx Cup standings on Sunday, fired a sparkling eight-under 63 with nine birdies to move to a 16-under total of 197 at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey.

Canada's Brooke Henderson took the lead at the CP Women's Open after shooting 2-under 70 Saturday in the third round at Wascana Country Club in Regina, Saskatchewan. Henderson, who turns 21 next month, sits in the lead at 14-under par. She is seeking to become the first Canadian -- and the second overall -- to win the tournament, which is Canada's national championship. Catcher Buster Posey is expected to be sidelined up to eight months after opting for hip surgery, the San Francisco Giants confirmed. Posey, 31, recently got a cortisone injection and missed last month's All-Star Game.

Sabalenka wins the maiden title in Connecticut
Young Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won her first WTA singles title, sweeping past Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1 6-4 at the Connecticut Open on Saturday in the final tune-up before next week's U.S. Open. The 20-year-old rising star will move up to number 20 in the world rankings after becoming the youngest champion in New Haven since Caroline Wozniacki in 2010.
