Dion Jordan, Rashaad Penny to play for Seattle Seahawks in season opener

Defensive end Dion Jordan and running back Rashaad Penny will suit up for the Seattle Seahawks in the season opener at Denver on Sunday.

Head coach Pete Carroll said Penny, the team's first-round draft pick, is recovered from the hand injury he suffered in practice after the first preseason game. Penny underwent surgery and is likely to be the backup to Chris Carson to begin the season.

"He's been on call for everything he could possibly be ready for and he's been always pushing to get out sooner and push all of the time frames," Carroll said. "His mentality has been great about it. So he's ready to play."

Jordan, 28, had offseason knee surgery and was slowed by a "stress reaction" before getting on the practice field for the first time this week. According to Carroll, Jordan will not have limitations against the Broncos.

"He's ready to go," Carroll said. "...Everybody's really fired up for him. He's done a marvelous job. He's had a lot of setbacks that he's had to deal with, and he's come through and he's ready to play football."

The Seahawks also released cornerback Byron Maxwell, linebacker Erik Walden and quarterback Austin Davis with injury settlements, making them free agents.

All three were placed on injured reserve during final cutdowns last week. Maxwell and Walden -- who was signed as a free agent in mid-August -- were each designated to have hip injuries.

The move ends Maxwell's second stint with the Seahawks after he played in 47 games (17 starts) for them from 2011 to 2014. The 30-year-old signed a free agent deal in Philadelphia in 2015 but was shipped to Miami after just one season and was released midseason by the Dolphins last year before rejoining Seattle.
