San Francisco 49ers linebacker Brock Coyle was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday due to a concussion and a broken bone in his back.

Coyle departed Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings due to the concussion and it was later discovered that he suffered a T4 compression fracture in his back.

"I know that's very scary, always," San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said. "It's six weeks until he can have contact again. He will recover sometime this year, but we know it's going to be at least six weeks before he can have a chance to play football."

The 49ers will decide later if Coyle, 27, is a candidate to be brought back from injured reserve.

San Francisco signed linebacker Terence Garvin on Wednesday to fill the roster opening. Garvin has played 74 career games with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2013-15), Washington Redskins (2016) and Seattle Seahawks (2017).

Garvin was in training camp with the Miami Dolphins and was recently cut.
