Aqib Talib will undergo ankle surgery on Thursday

Los Angeles Rams cornerback Aqib Talib will undergo ankle surgery on Thursday, according to coach Sean McVay.

On Tuesday, McVay gave no timetable for Talib's recovery, indicating that will be determined once the surgery is completed. NFL Network initially reported that Talib, who limped off with the injury in the second half of Sunday's 35-23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, would miss four to six weeks.

The Rams also are without another top cornerback. Marcus Peters, who suffered a calf strain Sunday. Initial reports indicated he could be out two to four weeks.

However, ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported Peters could be back sooner. He labeled him as "day to day," but indicated he would be unlikely to play against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night.

Los Angeles currently has cornerbacks Sam Shields, Nickell Robey-Coleman and Troy Hill on the active roster, and Dominique Hatfield and rookie Ramon Richards on the practice squad.

The Rams acquired Talib and Peters via trade this offseason, sending a second-round pick in a package to the Kansas City Chiefs for Peters and a fifth-rounder to the Denver Broncos for Talib. Peters is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who tallied 19 interceptions in his first three seasons in the league, while Talib has 34 interceptions (10 returned for touchdowns) three games into his 11th season.

Through three games, the Rams rank sixth in total defense (296.0 yards per game) and first in points allowed (12.0 per game), as well as seventh in interception rate. Peters had a pick-six late in Week 1, while Talib had two pass-breakups in Week 2 and forced a fumble on Sunday.
