Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis apparently is calling it quits -- at least for the rest of the 2018 season.
Davis, batting .168 after a 1-for-37 stretch with 20 strikeouts since Sept. 5, likely will not play in the final regular-season series against the Houston Astros that began Friday night, manager Buck Showalter told reporters.
Though he isn't injured, the Orioles veteran has not appeared in a game since Sept. 22 and has not hit a home run since Aug. 24.
Davis has 16 homers and 49 RBIs on the year. His .168 average is set to be the lowest by a qualified player in major league history, worse than the .179 hit by Rob Deer in 1991 and Dan Uggla in 2013.
Davis is just finishing the third season a seven-year, $161 million contract.
Trey Mancini was expected to continue to start at first base as the Orioles close out 2018 at home.
The 32-year-old Davis and Baltimore are experiencing miserable seasons together.
The Orioles opened Friday's series with a 46-112 record, the worst in the major leagues and in the club's 65-year history. The previous mark was 107 losses, set by the 1988 team.
The American League record for losses in a season -- 119, set by the Detroit Tigers in 2003 -- is not in jeopardy.
