Big-serving South African Kevin Anderson secured his spot at next month's season-ending ATP Finals by beating Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3 7-6(3) to win the Vienna Open on Sunday. The world number eight sent down 13 aces and 36 winners, winning 91 per cent of his first-serve points as he wrapped up the victory in just under two hours.

Tennis: Federer beats Copil to win 99th career title in Basel

World number three Roger Federer beat Romanian qualifier Marius Copil 7-6(5) 6-4 to win the Swiss Indoors on Sunday and claim his 99th career title in front of his home crowd in Basel. Federer began the year by winning the Australian Open and his ninth Basel title was his fourth of the season but the first since his victory in Stuttgart in June.

The Israeli sports minister fought back tears as the country's judo team won gold in a tournament in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, prompting Israel's national anthem to be played in a country that does not formally recognize it. Israel's Sagi Muki, the current European champion, won the men's under-81 kg category in the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, following compatriot Tal Flicker's gold win at the same event in 2017.

Leicester City owner and four others were on a helicopter that crashed: source

Leicester City soccer club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, a Thai tycoon, was among five people on board a helicopter that crashed and then exploded after a Premier League match on Saturday, a source close to the club said. Also on board were two pilots and one other person whose identity was not immediately known, the source said on Sunday. The source also named a fifth person on board.

Elina Svitolina stretched every sinew in a brilliant display of defensive tennis to register the biggest win of her career when she rallied for a 3-6 6-2 6-2 triumph over Sloane Stephens in an enthralling WTA Finals title decider on Sunday. Ukrainian Svitolina had arrived in Singapore woefully out of form, but the baseliner gathered momentum as the tournament progressed, winning all three pool matches and semi-final before subduing a fast-starting Stephens.
