India's first-choice goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, has been appointed as the captain for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Qatar. The match, considered a must-win for India's progression, will be held at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on Tuesday.

The Indian senior men's team arrived in Doha on Saturday night, aiming for a victory that could secure their first-ever entry into the third round of World Cup qualifiers. Head coach Igor Stimac named a 23-member squad for the pivotal fixture. Notable absentee, Sunil Chhetri, retired from international football after the match against Kuwait on Thursday.

Stimac emphasized that naming Sandhu as captain was an obvious choice, given his 71 international caps and his role as a veteran following Chhetri's retirement. India will face a young and dynamic Qatari team, with 21 out of their 29 players below the age of 24. Despite Qatar's status as group-toppers and their recent goalless draw against Afghanistan, India remains hopeful and focuses on effective attacking transitions.
