Ian Maatsen Joins Dutch Squad Amid Injury Setbacks
The Netherlands has called up left back Ian Maatsen to their squad for the European Championship in Germany. This follows injuries to midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong. Maatsen, who was on holiday, joins the team ahead of their first game against Poland. He spent the last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
The Netherlands have called up left back Ian Maatsen to their squad for the European Championship in Germany having suffered a second injury setback that sees midfielder Teun Koopmeiners left at home with a groin injury. Dutch coach Ronald Koeman confirmed Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong had been ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury while Atalanta’s Koopmeiners was injured in the warm-up ahead of Monday's 4-0 win over Iceland.
The 22-year-old Maatsen, who had been on holiday in Greece, is the only replacement brought into the squad, which means the Dutch will take 25 players to Germany on Tuesday ahead of their first game against Poland in Hamburg on Sunday. Maatsen, whose absence from the initial squad raised some eyebrows in the Netherlands, spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea, helping the German side reach the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.
