Manchester United have appointed their former striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, as an assistant to manager Erik ten Hag in another move aimed at restoring the club to its former glory as 20-time English champions.

Rene Hake also joins in an assistant role to complete an all-Dutch managerial team. Despite United finishing eighth last season, Ten Hag has signed a contract extension to stay until 2026.

'Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level,' stated Ten Hag. Van Nistelrooy, who scored 95 goals in 150 Premier League appearances for United between 2001 and 2006, adds significant experience.

Van Nistelrooy recently guided PSV Eindhoven to a second-place Eredivisie finish and a Dutch Cup win in the 2022-23 season. 'Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men's first-team operations,' added United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth.

'We are pleased to welcome Ruud back to the club where he achieved so much as a player,' Ashworth commented. Rene Hake, who has coached in the Netherlands for 20 years, also joins. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek has completed a move to Girona.
