Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara clinched their first grand slam titles in a dramatic Wimbledon men's doubles final on Saturday. The unseeded pair triumphed over Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson with scores of 6-7(7) 7-6(8) 7-6(11-9).
Despite starting their partnership only three months ago, Patten and Heliovaara defeated numerous seeded pairs to reach the final. Their opponents, Purcell and Thompson, had knocked out the top seeds, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, in the semi-finals.
The match, remarkably devoid of any breaks of serve, saw each set culminate in a tiebreak. With the pressure mounting, Patten and Heliovaara saved three championship points before clinching victory after nearly three hours on court. Centre Court rose in a standing ovation for the newly crowned champions.
