In a remarkable show of dedication, Australian field hockey player Matt Dawson has amputated part of his finger to compete in the Paris Olympics. The 30-year-old, a silver medallist at the Tokyo Games, broke his ring finger recently, jeopardizing his participation in Paris.

Doctors presented Dawson with two choices: to amputate part of the finger or wait for a longer recovery process. Only the former would ensure he could play in Paris. 'I made the decision and then called my wife, who advised caution. However, with all the information at hand, I decided to go ahead,' Dawson told the Seven Network.

The Australian men's hockey coach Colin Batch commended Dawson's courage and commitment, although he admitted he would hesitate to make the same decision. The hockey tournament at the Paris Olympics starts on July 27, with Australia aiming to improve on their silver finish from Tokyo.
