In a thrilling display of endurance, Tadej Pogacar took a significant leap towards his third Tour de France victory by winning another grueling mountain stage on Friday. The Slovenian cyclist successfully distanced himself from Jonas Vingegaard, increasing his lead to five minutes over his main competitor with merely two days left.
Pogacar seems almost assured of reclaiming the Tour title from two-time defending champion Vingegaard of Denmark, who trails him by 5 minutes and 3 seconds. Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, a newcomer to the Tour, lags 7 minutes and 1 second behind in third place.
Pogacar launched his decisive attack with around 9 kilometers remaining on the final 16-kilometer climb to the Isola 2000 ski resort. Vingegaard was unable to keep pace as Pogacar pursued the Dane's Jumbo-Visma teammate, Matteo Jorgenson. The American led the race momentarily but was overtaken with two kilometers left, allowing Pogacar to claim his 15th Tour stage win.
After a grueling four-hour ride, Pogacar looked back one last time, realizing his rivals were nowhere in sight. He crossed the finish line triumphantly, with Jorgenson trailing 21 seconds behind and Yates 40 seconds back in third. Carapaz and Evenepoel followed, with Vingegaard finishing 1:42 behind the Slovenian.
As the Tour heads into its penultimate stage on Saturday, riders face three challenging category 1 ascents, culminating at the Col de la Couillole. The event concludes on Sunday with a time trial from Monaco to Nice, deviating from the traditional Paris finish due to the upcoming Olympic Games.
